Going to the Zoo
Circle/Group Time *Animal Cookie Estimating Place animal
cookies into a clear plastic jar. Have children guess how many they think is in the jar. Remember
to only place an amount that the children can count to. Count how many is in the jar out loud and see who
guess was the nearest.
*Graph the children favorite zoo book. Were going on a lion hunt Polar Bear, Polar Bear Going to the Zoo
Lion Hunt
Going
on a lion hunt. But I'm not afraid! 'Cause I'm smart and I'm strong, And I'm very, very
brave. [Recite 1st part] I
see some grass. It's very tall grass. Can't go over it. Can't go under it. Gotta go through it. (Make
noises by brushing palms together.) [Repeat 1st Part]
I see a tree. A very tall tree. Can't go over it. Can't go under it. Gotta
chop it down. (Make chopping movements with hands.) [Repeat 1st part]
I see some mud. Ooey-gooey mud. Can't go over it. Can't
go under it. Gotta go through it. (Make squishy sounds with hands clasped together.) [Repeat 1st part]
I see a cave. A
dark spooky cave. Can't go over it. Can't go under it. Gotta go inside it. (Wave open hands in front of
eyes.) [Repeat 1st part]
I see
something furry. Something big and furry! (SCREAM) It's a LION!! RUN!!! Run out of the cave, Through
the mud puddle, Over the chopped down tree, Through the grassy place, Run inside and slam the door.

The Monkey Song The monkey claps, claps, claps his hands. (Clap hands) The monkey claps, claps, claps his hands. (Clap
hands) Monkey see, monkey do. The monkey does the same as you. The monkey jumps up and down, up and down. (Jump up and down) The monkey jumps up and down, up and down. (Jump up and down) Monkey see, monkey do. The monkey does the same as you. Have children
choose different actions to do and keep repeating the song until you are done.
Small Group/Child Choice *Animal Cracker Book Have each child draw a picture
of their favorite zoo animal. Under the picture write. Tami wants to see monkeys
at the zoo. Laminate pictures and turn it into a class book for the book nook area. Cut
out the front of an animal cracker box to be the cover of your class book. *Zoo
animal sorting Get out a supply of zoo animals. Have the children sort the animals into different categories.
Place a supply of berry baskets on the table so that the children can pretend that the animals are in the zoo. *Creative Art Zoo Plates Have pictures of real zoo animals posted near by. Set out
a supply of paper plates in different sizes. Add to the table different collage items (buttons, yarn, tissue
paper, pipe cleaners, construction paper, packing peanuts, feathers, craft foam shapes and markers). Don’t
forget the glue. Have the children create their favorite animal face. No face should
look the same. *Zoo animal collage Have parents tare pictures form
magazines of zoo animals. Place the pictures onto a table with construction paper, glue and scissors.
Let the children cut the pictures of the animals out and create a collage. *Animal
Cookie Cutter Match Trace around a supply of cookie cutter onto sheets of construction paper. Laminate
the sheets for durability. Place in the middle of the table a supply of animal cookie cutter and have the
children match each traced outline with the real cookie cutter.

Movement, Games and Activities I
can move like an animal Have children move around like
different animals. Encourage them to be like an animal when it is their turn. Have them
sing as they do the movement. This is what I can do This is
what I can do This is what I can do And now I pass it on to you! (child then points to a different child to be next) Slither like a snake Gallop like a zebra Waddle
