Frog in the Bog
Circle/Group Time *Read
the book Frog in the Bog
*Show the children
the rhyming words from the story with picture cards. Frog,
log, bog, dog, hog
*Estimating Jar Place plastic bugs in a jar and have the children estimate how many are in the jar.
Write on the board what the children estimate. Next count the bugs in the jar and see if anyone
was right.
Story Enhancing Retell the story Frog in the Bog by making a frog
with all the characters. I add strings so that when the alligator appeared in the story you could pull out all the characters
in the opposite order.
Small Group/Child Choice *Speckled
Painting Get out art trays, small squirt bottles with liquid watercolor, tooth brushes with trays of paint and a Varity
of paper. (Coffee filter, construction paper, paper towels, and news print) Have the
children use the squirt bottle and tooth brushes with paint to create their own speckled art.
*Word Rhyme Puzzles Make a copy of your picture cards of frog, hog, bog, log
and dog, laminate them and then cut them into puzzles one letter per each puzzle piece.
*Bug on a Log Have children
spread peanut butter or cream cheese inside celery. Have the children put raisins on top on the peanut
butter or cream cheese. Eat them for snack.
*Splat Painting Place butcher paper on the floor and tape down. Fill nylon stocking with popcorn kernels.
Fill trays with paint. Have children dip the filled stocking into the paint trays and drop the filled
stocking to the ground while they hang onto the end. It will bounce up just like a frog’s tongue.
*Water Table Habitat Turn your water table into a frog pond. Fill your table
with water. Add rocks, foam lily pads, frogs, tadpoles and plastic aquarium plants. Let
the children explore.
Froggy Math Ideas
All ideas use the
small rubber frogs that I purchased from the dollar store.
*Frog Sorting Make copies of the frog sheet from the back of the lesson onto different color construction
paper. Cut out and laminate for durability. Make a color sorting mat with different
colored lily pads. I made my mat out of a file folder and glued construction paper lily pads onto the fold,
laminated the folder for durability. Have children sort the frogs into different color groups.
Have children count the size of groups and identify the largest and smallest group.
*Frog
Counting Children count out frog to match the number on the lily pad. You can make this more challenging
to the children by adding dice and having them roll the dice identify the number and place frogs on the matching number.
To add another level to the game have the children roll two dice and add the dice together and then find the matching
number on the lily pad. Make sure your lily pad counting mats go to twelve. These counting
mats are made with scrapbooks card stock paper. Laminate for durability.
*Frog Graphing Skills Children can graph out frogs by color. Identify which frog has the
most, lest or same amount of frogs.
*Frog Patterning Make copies of the frog sheet from the back of the lesson onto different color construction
paper. Cut our and laminate for durability. Make a pattern mat out of a file folder.
Draw lines onto the folder to make squares. Each row represents a different pattern, to keep challenging
the children. I used colored sticker dots to create the different patterns, do not place dots across the
whole row leave half of the row blank so that the children can finish the pattern on their own. Have
children create patterns using the colored frogs.

Movement, Games and Activities Frog
Hop You will need a supply of classroom game hops or you
could use carpet squares. Goals: Balancing, Directionality and Spatial Awareness ·
You will need two or three game hops for this activity.
·
Have children stand in the middle of the game hop.
While standing in the middle of the hop toss the next hop in front about 12 inches and hop in. Child
will reach behind and pick up the game hop and toss it another 12 inches in front so that the can hop again. Just
like they are hopping on lily pads on a pond. · Children travel across the room by repeating this
toss and hop pattern.
