Letter & Word Study Center
*Alphabetic knowledge is the
strongest indicator of reading success in Kindergarten.
*The ability to recognize and distinguish
the individual letters of the alphabet is critical to learning the sounds of each letter.
National Early Literacy Panel 2005
In our classroom this year we created a Letter & Word
Study Center. We wanted the children to be able to independently practice using materials that related to just letters
and words. We feel that this will increase awareness of symbols, letters and words in the environment and their relationship
to sound. It will also increase understanding of the conventions and physical organization of print material and that
print carries a meaning.
On top is a Vetech Little Smart explore my school. Children
can press buttons with the alphabet and hear the letter and sound it makes. Shelf 1 has Tactile
Letters. Shelf 2 Spell-A-Word Board. Shelf 3 ABC Lacing Beads.
Shelf 4 Magnetic Letters & Boards with word cards. Shelf 5
A-Z Classroom Letter Center & A-Z Sorting Mats. Shelf 6 ABC Word Puzzle and Shelf
7 Word Building Puzzles.
Before entering the Letter & Word Study Center there is
a Chicka Chicka Boom Boom Tree that we made. The tree in made out of PVC Pipe and spray painted brown. The children
finger painted and roller painted with green and yellow to create the leaves. We places velcro on the tree trunk and
also on the little letter people.
When
I Play with Letter and Words I am Learning: *To recognize and name upper and lower case letters. *To associate letters with sounds they represent. *To recognize my name and certain words.
