*Read the book Stone Soup, have
a table with all the different vegetables on it so the children can see. Include a stone, large pot and
ladle. As you read the story and the town’s people come with their vegetable place that vegetable
in the pot.
*Read
the book Mean Soup, have the children discuss the differences between the two books. Dictate
what the children have to say.
*Making
Stone Soup, have children cut vegetables with plastic serrated knives (precook the carrots and potatoes).
Put vegetables in a large pot or crock pot to cook. Serve soup for children’s snack.
Have each child bring in a vegetable.
*Coupon Clipping, have your parents bring in coupons from the news paper fliers.
Let the children cut and sort them by category, Meat, Vegetables, Breads, and Cereals. Let the children
add them to the dramatic play area.
*Weighing
and Measuring Vegetables, get out kitchen scales and measuring tapes. Have the children weigh
and measure the different vegetables. Let them compare all the differences.
*Tub of Fun, get dish pans and put corn meal and flour in them. Add sifters,
measuring cups, measuring spoons, bowls and wooden spoons. The children will see how the flour will go
through the sifter but the corn meal will not. Dictate what the children are saying about their experience.
When activity is over add to your sand and water table for the children to use during free choice time.
*Class
Book Making, have children draw a picture of their soup. Dictate what the children say is
in their soup. When done make it into a cook book of soups and place in the dramatic play area or book
area.
*Soup Can Sorting/Patterning
set out a variety of soup cans from different companies. Have the children sort by company and by type
of soup. If you have coupons for these soups have the children match the coupon to the soup can.
Great for
alphabetic and word print knowledge
Block Area: Wrap up some of your larger block with brown paper bags or butcher paper. Then
let the children draw windows and doors on them so that it represents the village in the story. Add block
people and some smooth stones. Watch the children retell the story through play.
Add cans
of vegetable to the block area. Children can use the cans with the blocks to build their village.
It is also a great way to bring environmental print to the block area.
