And there he kept her very well.

    Five Little Pumpkins

Five little pumpkins sitting on a gate

The first one said “Oh my it’s getting late.”

The second one said “There are witches in the

     air.”

The third one said “But we don’t care!”

The forth one said “I’m ready for some fun.”

Whooooo went the wind and out went the light.

And the five little pumpkins rolled out of

     sight.

*Real Pumpkin Sorting, get many different sizes of pumpkins and also different colors of pumpkins and let the children sort by size and color of pumpkins.

*Make Pumpkin Pie let the children mix and make their own pumpkin pie.

*Torn Paper Pumpkins This is great for fine motor skills.  Have children tear orange paper and glue to paper to form a pumpkin.  You can even give them black paper to tear so that they can make a face.

*Brown bag pumpkins let the children pick a brown bag size of choice.  Then have them crumple newspaper and stuff their bag with the crumpled paper.  Tie off bag with masking tape or yarn.  Next let the children paint their brown sack what ever color of fall.  Let dry.  If the children want to add a face to it they can with items from the art area.

*Splat Paint Fill up old socks or old knee high nylons with pop corn cornels.  Get out trays of paint so the children can dip the socks into paint.  Lay a large piece of butcher paper on the floor.  Let the children stand over the paper and drop the socks SPLAT.  Now they have created their own splat paint art.

*Will it sink or float?  Do an experiment with the children and ask them if the pumpkin will sink or float?  Graph their answers.  Get a rock and pumpkin that weigh about the same weight.  Pass each item around so that the children can feel them, and then ask them if the pumpkin will sink or float.  When done and they have discovered that the pumpkin will float cut the pumpkin in half and explain that the pumpkin float because it is hollow side and air makes things float.  Show them how you cannot cut open a rock and it is solid, when things are solid they sink.

*Pumpkin Roll Will it roll like a ball?  Roll a ball so the children can see how a ball rolls straight.  Then ask the children “Do you think the pumpkin will roll straight like the ball?”  Roll the pumpkin and see what happens.  Dictate what the children say about the difference between the ball rolling and the pumpkin rolling.

*Measure pumpkins, how round are they? Get a variety of pumpkins (tall and skinny, short and fat, mini, and giant pumpkins) Get out measuring tapes and yarn, let the children measure how round the pumpkins are.  Can they find the roundest one?  Let the children write their results.  Dictate when needed.

*Weighing Pumpkins, how much do they weigh? Get a variety of pumpkins (tall and skinny, short and fat, mini, and giant pumpkins) Get out balancing scales and gage scales for the children to weigh the pumpkins on.  Can they find the heaviest pumpkin?  Can they find the lightest pumpkin?  Let the children write their results.  Dictate when needed.

Hands on Science

What is inside a pumpkin?  Get several pumpkins and cut the tops off for the children, let each child have a large soupspoon and plastic knife.  Let the children scoop out the pumpkins feeling the insides of it and smelling it.  Have the children separate the seeds from the rest of the pumpkin.
