What's In The Garden?

Lesson Plan Theme

Circle/Group Time
Shared Reading
Before reading the book have a class discussion tapping into the children’s prior knowledge by getting them to recall a personal experience that relates to the story.  This will help to spark their interest and show them how the story relates to them or something else they know.  This method will help build and improve children’s comprehension.
·         Have they ever planted a garden?
·         What have they seen in a garden before?
Read: Whose Garden Is It?

Whose Garden Is It?
Mary Ann Hoberman  More Info
price: $11.56

As you read the story see if the children guess whose garden it might be.  Give them clues to who might me next in the story.  (tweet like a bird) or (this animal has long ears and hops.  If that is not enough then extend it, it likes to eat carrots)

I like vegetable/fruit pocket chart
Build children’s grammar with a pocket chart story.  Provide different pictures of vegetables and fruit with a repetitive sentence. (You can use the pictures from the vegetable/fruit attachment)  Have the picture cards separate from the sentence strips so the children are able to move the text around and retell their story.

Five Little Bees
One little bee flew and flew.
He found a friend,
and that made two.
Two little bees as busy as could be--
Along came another
and that made three.
Three little bees wanted one more,
Found one soon,
and that made four.
Four little bees,
going to the hive,
Spied their little brother,
and that made five.
Five little bees working every hour--
Buzz away bees, and find another flower.
Make a set of paper cup bees to use with the song above.  I used yellow paper cups with craft foam, pom poms and pipe cleaners.

Caterpillar Transition Game   When it is time to transition children away from group time and into a different activity it is always good to have a transition game. This allows children to move more slowly to the next activity with less confusion.

Make a large caterpillar with different color circles and black legs.  This caterpillar will be placed on my flannel board in the circle area or on the floor.  On the back of each caterpillar body part (circle) is a different action movements for the children to do. As the children come up to play the game they roll a large cardboard box dice with color dots to match all of the caterpillars body parts (circles). A child comes up and rolls the dice identifies the color and then finds that color caterpillar part from the caterpillar. Once child finds the color the teacher reads the movement that child needs to do before moving on to the next activity.

I have a class of 24 children so to make things run smoothly I have two to three dice going at the same time. I run the game and my assistant is making sure that the children are following the plan that they gave to us as to what they will be doing during say free choice time or making sure that they wash their hands for snack and find their seat.

I made the dice out of a 6 X6 mailing box.

Each caterpillar body part has a Velcro sticker on it and the head of the caterpillar also has Velcro stickers on it.

Small Group/Child Choice

Ants   Set out a supply of egg carton and apple carton cut outs.  Have a supply of collage material for the children to choose from to make their ants with.  Include glue, scissors and scrap construction paper incase the children would like to form something for their ant on their own.

Birds   Set out different items that could be made into a bird. (paper tubes, sections of egg cartons, sections of apple dividers, small boxes and small paper cups) Have the children painted the base of the bird with glue paint and then created their bird using feathers, wiggle eyes, buttons and orange triangles.

Nest   Set out different items that can be made into a nest.  First have children chose their base (Egg carton tops, apple dividers, scrap foam, paper plates and egg carton bottoms). Next they painted the base with glue paint (mix equal parts of white glue to paint). After the children painted the base of their nest they place the nest making items onto the base (yarn, sticks, moss, cotton balls, horse hair, leaves, and colored shredded paper) on their glue paint.

Ladybug Dice Game   Make a ladybug out of construction paper, glue onto green scrapbooking paper and laminate for durability. (I used scrapbook paper that looked like grass) Get a supply of black pom poms.  Have child roll a dice and identify the number on the dice, next have the child count out the number of black pom poms to match the number on the dice. Once child has the right amount of pop poms have child place them onto the ladybug. When the ladybug is full of spots child is done. With this dice game all children are winners.  You can exchange the dice for number cards if you like.

Green House Cup Garden

Have the children plant seeds in clear cups.  Once they have planted their seed have them water their seeds with a squirt bottle.  Once the soil is damp, place another cup on top, tape around the edge and set in a window sill.
